Consistency is the main target of this chapter in my life. Throughout my journey with cyanotype it has been a struggle trying to get a grip on the oh so simple concept. It finally helps to have a solid space to work but I still struggle to keep a tight leash on all the elements involved. I think I have lost interest in the idea of creating the perfect print. Perhaps adhering to standards that someone else has created and deemed right just isn’t what’s best for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s certainly important to understand the fundamentals. After that, I say why not cut loose. Create what feels right to you in your heart. This is the flow state I’ve been searching for and can feel myself getting closer to it with every attempt I make.
In this body of work I hope to convey a consistent expression of how my experience as a commercial fisherwoman influences my creative work. All of the following prints are inspired by original photos I’ve taken of my time in Kodiak, Alaska out at sea working as a deckhand.
In the summer of 2024 I spent 4 months working seasonally as a deckhand on a commercial salmon fishing vessel in Kodiak, Alaska. These are some of the prints I created while out at sea.
